Chipmunks (sometimes also called ground squirrels) are easy to identify due to their small size and striped markings. The eastern chipmunk and the thirteen-lined ground squirrel are native throughout Michigan. The eastern chipmunk is approximately 8-12 inches in length and weighs between 3 and 5 ounces. The thirteen-lined ground squirrel is much larger, weighing about 9 ounces, and is slender with large eyes and small ears.
Both eastern chipmunks and thirteen-lined
ground squirrels are burrowing rodents who love to dig underground
tunnels and nests. They are omnivores, which means they eat a variety
of food including seeds, nuts, roots, fungi, grass, shoots, worms, and
bird eggs. They are also quite fond of vegetables, flower bulbs, and
flower buds, so if your garden is suffering from animal damage,
chipmunks may be the culprit!
Chipmunks are common throughout all of the
U.S., including Northern Michigan. They are fond of both woodlands and
fields near woods, but it is not unusual to find them in suburban and
rural neighborhoods. Chipmunks will invade a property by burrowing
under structures where they feel covered and safe. Both eastern
chipmunks and thirteen-lined ground squirrels dig burrows in late
autumn and hibernate during the winter.
In urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods, chipmunks’ digging habits often blemish manicured lawns, vegetable and flower gardens, and other landscaped areas. This can create issues that are difficult to treat. If you are experiencing chipmunks or ground squirrels in your home or business, chances are that they have already established multiple points of entry. Burrow entrances are usually smaller than three inches in diameter and are about the size of a golf ball.
The greater the chipmunk population in a home, the greater the damage they can create. By burrowing under stairs, patios, driveways, foundations or retaining walls, they can cause both the ground and concrete to collapse. It is important to act quickly once a chipmunk problem is identified. Ignoring it can result in costly repercussions.
Chipmunk Health Concerns
Chipmunks do not present any significant
health or safety concerns for humans or pets. Nevertheless, it is
recommended you stay away from all wild animals to prevent potential
issues from arising.
